Life Insurance Myths — Debunked

These are the things people believe that stop them from getting covered. Let’s fix that.

MYTH
"Life insurance is too expensive."
The truth: A healthy 30-year-old can get $500,000 of term coverage for less than a Netflix subscription — often $20–$30/month. Most people overestimate the cost by 3x.
MYTH
"I don’t need it — I’m young and healthy."
The truth: Young and healthy is exactly when you should lock it in. Your age and health determine your rate forever. The people who wait until they “need it” are the ones who get declined or pay triple.
MYTH
"My job covers me — I’m fine."
The truth: Group life insurance typically covers 1–2x your salary. Most families need 10–12x. And the moment you leave that job, the coverage disappears.
MYTH
"I have a pre-existing condition — I can’t get coverage."
The truth: Many conditions are insurable. Every carrier has different underwriting guidelines — which is exactly why working with an independent broker matters. I know which carriers are most lenient for which conditions.
MYTH
"It’s complicated and I don’t want to deal with it."
The truth: That’s what I’m here for. One conversation, I do the comparing, you make one decision. Some policies are approved same day.

Tips for Existing Policyholders

Having coverage is the first step — these tips help make sure it actually works the way you intend when the time comes.

📋 Order Multiple Death Certificates

When the time comes, your family will need more copies of the death certificate than they expect — typically 8 to 12. Each institution (insurance company, bank, mortgage lender) usually requires its own original. Order extras upfront to avoid delays.

📁 Keep Policy Documents Accessible

Store your policy documents somewhere your beneficiaries can actually find them — a fireproof safe, a shared folder, or a printed copy with your will. The most common reason claims are delayed is that families can't locate the policy number or carrier information.

👥 Review Your Beneficiaries Annually

Life changes — marriage, divorce, new children, deaths in the family. Your beneficiary designation overrides your will, so an outdated name on file can send your death benefit to the wrong person. Review it every year and after any major life event.

📞 Know Your Carrier's Claims Process

Every carrier has a different process for filing a claim. Ask your carrier now — while things are calm — exactly what your beneficiaries will need to do. Write it down and keep it with your policy documents so they're not figuring it out in a crisis.

🔄 Consider a Policy Review Every Few Years

Your life changes, and so should your coverage. A raise, a new home, another child, or a change in health can all mean your current policy is either too small or possibly overpriced. A free review with me takes one call and costs you nothing.

💰 Understand Your Cash Value (If Applicable)

If you have a whole life or IUL policy, you may have accumulated cash value you're not aware of. This can be borrowed against for major expenses without surrendering your policy. Check your latest statement or call your carrier to see where you stand.

🏥 Notify Your Carrier of Major Health Changes

Some policies have riders or provisions that are triggered by qualifying health events. If you've been diagnosed with a serious illness, contact your carrier — you may be entitled to accelerated benefits that can help cover care costs while you're still alive.

✍️ Tell Your Beneficiaries the Policy Exists

Billions of dollars in life insurance go unclaimed every year because beneficiaries didn't know a policy existed. Make sure the people named on your policy know it's there, who the carrier is, and where the documents are stored.
